Omigod do I hate moving. I will say this much: moving out of someplace you have lived for two years is like a triage.
Tuesday morning the movers came and took away the furniture. Then the UPS Store (formerly Mailboxes Etc) came and picked up my computer to ship it home. Then I flipped out, took a last load to storage, packed all of my clothes which were still everywhere (left some stuff behind I didn't intend to, dah), handed my keys to Josh and got into a cab for the airport. It felt like I didn't even have time to breathe.
spreadnparanoia and I had flights at about the same time, so we shared a cab and had our goodbyes in the airport terminal. I was just totally unprepared to handle that... I was nowhere near ready to confront the possibility of just how long-term this move might be (not that I expect to stay here permanently, mind you, just that it might be a while before I can find a Chicago-based job.)
Speaking of which: my interview Monday with Zulki Partners went OK. I should hear next week if they want me back for a second interview, in which case I would have to fly out. The turnover would happen psycho fast. I have to talk to
attackmonkey and determine if I even want this job. I should also talk to
bobbler and see if he's still interested in
pax_malificus's old place. The Zulki Partners thing would start October 3rd... very little time to find an apartment, so being able to just have a roommate and move into a nice place would be exceedingly convenient. The timing is probably way too tight to swing that.
Anyway. Tuesday I got home and said hi to my mother and baby sister. It felt surprisingly good... and it felt better when Jon Singer and Jon Horowitz called within about 5 minutes of one another wanting to come hang out with me. They both leave over the weekend (Singer for Brighton in Boston, Horowitz for Bates in Maine) so it was good to squeeze in some time with them. We went to Borders and I finally picked up Life At These Speeds. And Horowitz made me a copy of the Garden State soundtrack. In case I haven't said it enough already: GO SEE THAT FREAKIN' MOVIE.
Wednesday morning my mother woke me up to tell me that A) I had a dentist appointment in 2 hours (I have to do all this doctor stuff, because my insurance through my parents runs out at the end of this month) and B) she forgot to mention that she had a spare ticket to see Norah Jones at the Oakdale that night and would I like to come? So I hauled my ass out of bed to get my teeth cleaned for the first time in 12 months (ugh) and that evening sat in the third row and watched Norah Jones singing from well within spittin' distance. That was awesome.
That pretty much brings us up to today. I helped Jon Singer load his stuff into a borrowed minivan today, as he is driving bright and early tomorrow to move into his new place. Then I ended up going out tonight with him to have ice cream with Sara, who is freaking out about heading to college at the crack of dawn on Saturday. Tomorrow evening I'm driving out to the Cape with my family for the long weekend, because otherwise there would be no way for them to get the third car back to Connecticut. I hope that my computer arrives before we leave (damn ineffable UPS shipping) as I abhor the familial machine.
This is my life right now. Gah.
