They said it would be back. And lo and behold, it is back! Life of Riley returns, if not better than ever, certainly looking every bit as good as it was.

My car troubles are basically solved. I took the car out to Jiffy Lube earlier this afternoon intending to get an oil change. (I fibbed to my mother a while back and told her that I was doing this before I took the car out here in the first place, but what's done is done.) While that was accomplished I had them disconnect the battery on the advice of [livejournal.com profile] pax_malificus, intending to reset the computer. That way if there was really a problem the check engine light would come back on. I was also talked into replacing the transmission fluids by the boys at JL.

So I drove the car away feeling pretty good, particularly because the check engine light did not, in fact, come back on. The only downside is that now the stereo doesn't work. A quick perusal of the owner's manual confirms that I need to enter a five-digit code in order to reactivate it. The code is nowhere to be found (at least, its not with all my car-related stuff in my glovebox.) Ostensibly it can be retrieved by the folks at a Honda dealership if I have the radio's serial number. Maybe I should call Mitchell (the dealership from whom I bought the car) before I panic too much. But the thought of driving back across the country with no tunes is depressing.

DCP tonight, where [livejournal.com profile] jrdameonhv promises me an NPC flavor of the week to keep me entertained for a couple hours. Then I will eat, drink and be merry and bid all the NU kiddies a fond farewell -- because tomorrow morning (again, barring catastrophic weather event) I'm headed back to Connecticut. Here we go.

Hi Eben!

Ali Rau here. Was surfing around online and came across your LJ-
thought I'd drop you a note.

It seems like you're going to be back in West Hartford for some of the
spring, yes? I'm back in CT too for grad school (Yale School of
Forestry and Environmental Studies), so perhaps we could hang out- I'll
be home in Burlington for part of spring break starting this Monday the
7th. Other than that, I'm in New Haven for the rest of the spring,
going to be in DC this summer (if an internship works out), and would
love to see you again.

My updates- graduated from Bowdoin with Pat Rockefeller (we had a local
cable channel TV political debate show together called Rock & Rau) with
Economics/Environmental Studies in may, worked at various environmental
nonprofits in CT, Maine, and DC over the summers, wrote a senior
thesis, getting a master's of environmental management at Yale (2
years), and am applying to law schools in the fall. Yes, I know it's
crazy. Just got back from Kenya last week (where, incidentally, I
studied for a semester junior year) where I spent time in the most
boring UN meetings ever, hanging out with Wangari Maathai (yes THAT
one! She was so awesome!) and trying to milk a cow up in the highlands
with some tribal farmers. Had to skip a week of class and sit for 18
hours in airplane delays, but worth it. Oh, and I'm taking judo.

Life at Yale is tough- tons of reading, writing, research, problem
sets, and reports. There's been lots of housing issues too- resulting
in my original roomates and I splitting up in December and having to
scramble around for housing (I now live by myself, and that's all I'm
sayin'). And I hate doing dishes. But I like my classes and the
professors, and it's teaching me what I want to know. I don't
especially feel like I truly fit in, though. I've found some friends,
but I'm not the ultra-enthusiastic gung-ho grassroots type when it
comes to the environment- I'm much more of a work-from-the-inside-out
policy person. I miss the wacky group of friends I had at Bowdoin, but
it's nice being only an hour away from Babs and Freddy Boy. (And 20
minutes away from Dylan, who's at Wesleyan being a huge druggie, but
we're not very close although I love him as my only brother). The trip
to Kenya did let me get to know people much better outside the
classroom though. Details on that if I see you.

Anyway, I have to go finish my last takehome exam so I can head for
home tomorrow, but I'd love to see you in the Center for coffee or
something this or next week, and maybe later this semester if you're up
for it.
