Only a few precious days left in Weimar. One of my roommates (Chris) is already packing... he departs tomorrow morning, early. A surprising number of people aren't actually going to be in classes tomorrow, or at the party tomorrow night. I understand now why they made such a big deal about the party we had two weeks ago... the organizers understood it was the last big occasion we were all going to be together for. Wish somebody had told me that...
I at least am departing at a normal time. Turn in my keys Saturday morning, get on a train Saturday midday for Frankfurt. Spend the night in a hotel in Frankfurt, then get up early Sunday morning to fly home to Hartford. Two weeks in Hartford and Greater Boston, during which I will see my family, Jon Singer, Jacqui, Sara... um, that's about the end of the list of people I'm actually psyched to see, but hey. That'll hunt as its only two weeks and then I go really home to Evanston.
I'm really psyched to see Jon Singer. Its craziness, I haven't spoken to him face to face in over twelve months. Admittedly, there's a very logical reason for that, what with his having been in Japan and all. But I've been friends with him pretty consistently since we were in like 3rd grade. Long enough to be absolutely certain that he will always be my bro. So the idea of spending a weekend up at Brandeis just chilling with him is immensely appealing, its been far too long since he and I have really talked.
I've been reading the thread of responses to
rollick's recent post. In light of my recent conversation with my Dad about employment, I considered for a moment that I too would like her job. Then I remembered some of my innate ridiculous characteristics and realized that I would only want her job if I got to set the content of the site; i.e. as a way to interview all the people I idolize and promote the media I think people should be hearing, seeing and reading. Case in point, I would positively kill to interview Brian & Jesse of Brand New. (Yes, I know I've been talking about Brand New a lot lately. Shuturrrrrrp...) I think they'd be interesting and insightful (just look at this amazing bio they wrote for the website), and having such an interview published in a major newspaper or magazine of some kind would get the word out to the world about what an awesome group they are. That's actually happening anyway... the boys have done really well for themselves with their second album...
But that's not what the job is. The job is reviewing media and interviewing people selected by someone who is not you. That's a job I would quite possibly be terrible at (although come to think of it, I'd probably become obsessive fanboy-ish while interviewing Jesse & Brian anyway and become utterly unable to speak; either way I'm screwed.) Moreoever I might even grow to outright hate it, or at least periodically flip out and be forced to drive to Liz Phair's house in the middle of a phone interview for the whole purpose of hitting her repeatedly in the face with a rolled-up newspaper while shouting "No! That's a bad recording artist! That's a very bad recording artist! No! Bad!" at the top of my lungs. Stuff like that would probably get me fired.
I guess no one's really got it easy.
