I had a spectacular weekend in Boston. Which is funny because, all things considered, I didn't really do that much. But it was super nice to see Jon Singer after nearly twelve months spent apart. I didn't expect any awkwardness, and there wasn't any... we clicked almost instantaneously back into our old rhythm and were shooting the shit in no time. The boys are, indeed, back in town. We even had a conversation about something weird that happened to him in Japan over early lunch at IHOP on Saturday... pretty much just like I imagined we would. Jon remains an incredibly comforting constant in my life.
Geeks at Brandeis suck my nuts, though. We went to the Brandeis Video Gaming Club on Friday night (it would be hypocritical to attack their choice of night since DCP runs every other Saturday, but... Friday night!) They were playing Smash Melee on a big projection screen and Soul Calibur (sp?) on a dinky little 19" TV. Jon and I subbed in for a little teamplay on Melee and, as predicted, had our asses handed to us. We managed not to look like total schlubs, tho'. Anyway, the trouble was that these people represented a startlingly homogenous cross-section of everything I hate about the geek set (that my own Chicago crew of friends has thankfully so little of.) Within two hours of our arriving a group of them were engaged in a loud, angry and rigorous argument about the existence of cheating in some game I had never heard of. They weren't even playing video games while talking about them, they were just standing around shouting. For the love of god, people... can't we all just play some Bubble Bobble and get along?
Met Jon's friend Kyli on Saturday, finally. She's been his best friend at Brandeis since before he left for Japan, but all I genuinely knew about her was that Jon thought she was gorgeous. Which is a useful piece of information, but it only gets you so far, y'know? She seems really nice tho', and good for Jon. Maybe a little too grown up (or, ahem, wannabe grown-up, anyway) for my tastes... but then Jon has always been the more mature of the two of us, while I wallow in the ever-fleeing remnants of my youth.
The weekend closed with a visit to my sister Sarah in Boston on Sunday. We watched the first three quarters of an utterly pathetic football game (the Patriots, of course) before I left in disgust (also to get home because I was tired.) It was nice to see her while I was home, now I don't have to wait until Thanksgiving. I love my family. I came home and rented a stack of DVDs, mostly re-views, to get me through the week... and then kicked it all off with a re-view of Super Troopers. I don't care what anyone else on earth says, that movie is hysterical... I may have to watch it with director's commentary before I return it. Oh! And I talked to Sam last night after the movie. She's having her wisdom teeth out today and, understandably, does not sound very psyched. I'm sure she'll be fine tho'. I miss that girl like crazy... one more week now, I can do this. Right.
