Sweet funky Moses, I GOT A JOB OFFER!

The positively swell folks at Liberty Mutual called today to offer me a job in National Markets Underwriting. I'll be starting soon here in Boston, where I will do six months of training. Then I'm off to sweet home Chicago, to work in their office out there. Its like a dream come true. I mean, now I've got all sorts of new problems to deal with, most notably housing... but right now, who cares? I'm employed!!!

Phew. OK, so, I had an actual update percolating before all this happened, and I'm going to try and get it out without blithering too much.

We'll start a week ago. Tuesday night is gaming night in Boston, at least every other week. I got most of the prelude work wrapped up and moved on to the first actual chapter in my Exalted chronicle. It seems to be going well... I'm employing some Storyteller shortcuts that are less artful than I'd like, but its in the interest of getting the game off the ground quick enough to hold the interest of new players. So far I would say that's working, but I won't really know for a few games yet.

Wednesday night I met up with [livejournal.com profile] amuronomiko in Waltham. We went out for dinner and ice cream and then back to her place to watch some Buffy on DVD. She's right towards the end of Season 4, and when I heard that she was within a few episodes of "Restless" (one of my all-time favorites) I flipped out a little. She didn't seem to mind the geekiness too much, tho'. Sadly she's a working stiff so we only made it as far as "Primeval" before I was unceremoniously given the boot. Oh, "Primeval"... you are so filled with ugly crap that you hurt me more than maybe any other terrible episode.

Friday night I hung out with [livejournal.com profile] lady_eleret, who was up for the weekend visiting [livejournal.com profile] sleetfall. We got some food and then retired to [livejournal.com profile] sleetfall's apartment to watch Team America: World Police onDemand. They didn't like it as well as I did, but then no matter how many times that pair has it demonstrated to them that my sense of humor is terrible, they go on trusting my judgment. I wash my hands of the whole thing.

Saturday morning I got up fairly early and headed out to Cape Cod. July 16th is my father's birthday, you see, so I had to be there. I arrived in time for a boat ride to the beach with the family. It was an unexpectedly beautiful day. We had a moderately-sized family dinner (that included my maternal grandparents) to celebrate my Dad turning the unremarkable age of 54. It was a good time. Sunday was unexpectedly nice as well so we got out to the beach again. I'm starting to develop something resembling a tan.

Sunday the weather was a bit windy, so we didn't go as far out into Chatham Bay, making it only as far as Crescent Beach. Around low tide I took it upon myself to walk across the dunes to the far side of Crescent Beach, which is one of the beaches facing the Bay, I forget which. It was windy but the water was unseasonally balmy, so I walked out as far as I could on a sort of sandbar penninsula. That turned out to be pretty far; I was within shouting distance of the channel in water only as deep as my ankles. While I was standing out there admiring the scenery, watching a bank of dark clouds move over the land where town is while it remained patchy-but-sunny over the beach, the tide turned. So I was actually able to swim most of the way back, as the dangerous current was pushing me into the sandbar and shore, as opposed to sweeping me out into the channel. It was keen.

Yesterday I arrived home in sweltering heat and promptly went to the shops at the Prudential Center. I picked up a copy of Half Blood Prince and read it all day. I stopped in the evening for dinner, and went over to [livejournal.com profile] sleetfall's place for West Wing marathon Monday on Bravo. This turned out to be a decision of mixed wisdom. On the one hand it broke up Half Blood Prince for me somewhat, allowing me a chance to digest the first third of the book. On the other hand I stayed up until sometime after 4 AM finishing the damn thing.

I went to bed and lay awake until at least 5 AM, sort of in a state of shock. (For those not really following the whole Harry Potter thing, suffice it to say that Book 6 is Really Excellent and that there are Big Things afoot in it.) And I was still in emotional turmoil when I woke up this morning, which made this whole job offer thing a bit of a rollercoaster dip for me. That pretty much brings us up to date.
