Well here it is, kids, my very first livejournal post from work. I was putting off updating, mostly because I felt weird posting from work and in the evenings I've either not been in the mood or been otherwise engaged. But its Friday afternoon, both my manager and mentor are out of the office, so what the Hell.
So when last we left our hero, I had just been offered my job. I, obviously, accepted. I spent the next week sort of bouncing back and forth between Boston and the Cape for a bit, taking one last chance to soak up the sun unfettered by the cares and worries of employment. And that's not to mention the opportunity to get advice and free stuff from my parents. Sunday the 31st I arrived back in Boston to help my sister Sarah pack up her moving truck to drive out to Steeterville in Chicago. Then I went to bed nice and early to be ready for my big day, and promptly got hardly any sleep at all due to nerves.
I started Monday, making this the end of my first full week. To summarize: things at work are very good. The people are very nice, and I don't appear to be too far behind the other half dozen members of my training class. In order to have me play catch-up they're having me skip some of the insurance basics books the others have already read and move right into Workers Compensation coverage. Its a little daunting, and I need to train myself to have a bit more disicpline about knuckling down and getting through the reading, but I'm coming along.
Tuesday night I unexpectedly had Exalted. We hadn't had it the week before due to several of the players being out of town, a fact I was unfortunately unaware of until that day. I say "unfortunately" because as it turned out Exalted was about the only reason I came home from the Cape that week at all, but in the end I took the opportunity to do some errands, so it all worked out. Anyway, game appeared to go well, although we were one man (or in this case woman) down due to illness. I really enjoy running that game, but its always hard to tell whether players are enjoying a thing.
Wednesday I went to see Lucky Boys Confusion with
amuronomiko. They were playing at Axis, which is attached to Avalon next to Fenway Park. The show was excellent.
amuronomiko and I arrived early enough to catch dinner and two of the three opening acts. The second, Melee (or as they would have it, Mêlée) had a certain charm. I bought a $10 CD of theirs and I'm not unhappy with it. The third act, the Working Title, I felt was pretty badly mismatched for an LBC show. They were just kind of emo, not downbeat per se, but with none of the driving force possessed by the Boys. LBC was of course sublime; they remain a stellar live band. I was saddened to once again confirm that away from the Chicago area they play essentially none of their old stuff. I was also moderately surprised by the number of drunken frat asshats who showed up to chug Miller Lite and mosh. That's just not the Lucky Boys crowd I'm used to.
That pretty much brings us up to date.
