Let's do this update bullet points style:
I didn't get that Zulki Partners job. They decided to go with people they'd already interviewed. I've been meaning to e-mail
attackmonkey about this for days and days and days, and I just haven't gotten around to it. I could chalk it up to problems getting my SMTP server straightened out, but its really mostly laziness. I have been fairly intentionally disconnecting myself from many of the things that I enjoy (forums and online gaming and stuff) I think in an extent to have a moment of wallowing in my misery and really being sure that I needed to get out of my parent's house ASAP. But that freakish pity partying has (hopefully) come to an end...
Adventures in jury duty. I was assigned to jury duty this past Friday the 10th. I had already deferred once before due to being away at school, but had no good excuse not to go this time, despite the fact that I could now acceptably prove residency in Illinois (I'm registered to vote in Evanston these days). Despite my mother's insistence that it would be a good experience for me, I had no particular desire to actually be assigned to a jury.
Fortunately I wasn't. I was voir dire'd for a criminal case, namely an assault that from the sounds of the summary may have been racially motivated. But fortunately the defense attorney twigged to the fact that I have a generally good opinion of police officers, and his lengthy questioning eventually produced a response from me of "Yeah, I'd say that cops are more likely to be trustworthy than your average person." That, as I'm sure you can imagine, rendered me immediately inelligible - imagine that. :) I got out of the thing without even technically telling a lie. And then after another hour or two of waiting around was sent home, and will be payed $25 for time that was mostly spent reading Life At These Speeds by Jeremy Jackson. Two thumbs up. It makes me sad that his other work is by all accounts not on the same level.
Anyway, I emerged that day feeling strangely exultant, just in time to see Jon S again (he was back home picking up some clothes he hadn't moved the first time around.) His parents treated me to dinner out with them and then we all hung out until the wee hours.
Saturday in Bean Town. I woke up on Saturday and caravan'd with Jon S to see his new apartment in Brighton. Its super-nice and very spacious. We killed the late afternoon assembling his new desk (which I have to admit was fun, and a good chance to just hang out with him.) Then we made dinner and watched a little Celebrity Poker Challenge. I still think that endless games of Texas Hold 'Em are not my preferred way to play poker, but its still a damned entertaining show. After that we went out for drinks at a bar called the Last Drop with Jon's friends Allen (sp?) and Avi. Sadly my sister Sarah was unable to join me, but perhaps I will be headed back at that way soon for Kate's birthday party. All in all it was definitely a good weekend.
The trip up and back gave me a solid 3-4 hours of time spent uninterrupted in my car, alone, driving on the highway. That was incredibly good for my mental health. I am not being sarcastic in any way. Singing my heart out while driving on the highway, a task I maintain I was built for, and just generally having time to think is absolutely wonderful.
Sunday I made it back to Connecticut in the afternoon in time to hide away in my house during the annual block party, sneaking out only to get food and avoid contact with my neighbors. The damned thing was held right in front of our house this year and my mother apparently ran it - she did a nice job, as well, but it made it hard to avoid. When I actually did emerge I discovered that I don't know half the neighborhood anymore, which suited me just fine. I watched a few movies on television and was annoyed at their commercials, then eventually was roped into helping with the fairly massive clean-up effort. And that pretty much brings us up to date.
