My parents were out of town this weekend. They left town on Thursday night and didn't come home until sometime after 10 PM last night. They left me in charge of myself, the dog and my baby sister. All in all I'd say I handled the second two responsibilities fairly well, although I have to give a shoutout to all three of my sisters who in turns wholly relieved me of having to get up particularly early to walk the dog.
Friday night I headed out to Will Baldwin's homestead in Glastonbury, where he and his Japanese girlfriend Yuko were cooking okonomiyaki for a crowd of people. Estimates as to the size of this crowd of people varied extensively over the course of the week, so I was slightly unimpressed when I arrived to find only Dave A and a bunch of the Baldwin's friends-of-the-family. Will assured me, however, that Salomé and Allie L would be arriving later, so I settled in to chat with Dave.
And then I was promptly blown away by the number and variety of people who marched in the door, including a really decent chunk of the old crew from high school (Nicole G, Kate P, Tabitha, Tara and, as promised, Salomé.) Now I have to admit I was slightly flummoxed by this development. Fortunately, although I was never a boy scout, I do my best to be always prepared... so I had brought my own liquor with me, and commenced drinking heavily. Someone made a comment early on that hanging out with friends from high school always causes people to revert to that stage in their lives. I was desperate for that not to happen to me, and plying myself with alcohol seemed like a good escape plan. Fortunately for me it appeared to work (or I got drunk enough to not care.) I got in a few decent jokes, said some things I ought to regret but don't, and eventually sobered up and sat up late talking with Dave and Salomé. I can't say whether a good time was had by all, but a good time was had by me.
I had plans the next day with Horowitz that were so vague they couldn't actually be characterized as tentative and really it was a stretch to even call them plans. So I got up at midday, nursed my minimal hangover with water and a long shower, and gave his cell phone a call. As always, it was turned off, so I left a message and sat around for a while. Eventually he called me, and he and his girlfriend Sarah showed up to chill on the deck in my back yard while we attempted to track down Will on the phone. We eventually suceeded and were rewarded with the presence of not only Will & Yuko but also Jon S and my ex-girlfriend Sara. Yuko's innate shyness battled with her enchantment over my adorable puppy, and everyone just sort of sat around shooting the shit for a couple of hours. When my sister Sarah arrived home, slightly annoyed at having had to stay extra long for her bridesmaid's dress-fitting, there were three people in my house with essentially the same name. Confusing.
My crowd of friends basically evaporated at dinnertime. Jon S hung around long enough for me to burn him a CD of Seasons 1 & 2 of Red vs. Blue (which he'd never seen before) and then I drove him home as well. I returned and my sister Sarah treated my baby sister Allie and I to dinner at the Corner Pug, a truly excellent local bar and grill where we gorged ourselves on cheese fries and I failed to finish my enormous hamburger. My sister Kate eventually showed up to accompany Sarah to a party that I was tentatively invited to (and/or invited to designated-drive home from.) Yes, oddly enough, all four kids in my family returned to our childhood home this weekend, in the absence of our parents. At that point I was sort of mentally and emotionally exhausted (seeing Kate P and ex-girlfriend Sara within the same 24 hour period has that effect on me, go figure.) So I begged off of that plan as well as vague plans with Horowitz and Jon S to head over to Trinity and instead stayed home and watched Loser, which was as good as I remembered. That pretty much brings us up to date excepting Sunday, on which comparatively little happened. Oof.
