I had my second Kaplan training on Monday, and it went well. We were down to just 6 trainees, as opposed to about 10 at the initial training session. Unfortunately I was 5 minutes late, so I don't know whether to expect those people back tomorrow or what. I do know that I got my performance review by e-mail today (Kaplan refers to it as a "Core Competencies" sheet). Mostly Goods and Fairs... no Excellents, but only one Needs Immediate Attention. For those unfamiliar with the process, Kaplan training consists of these things called Teach-Backs; basically you perform the act of teaching using your fellow trainees as pretend students. Given that the material for the Teach-Backs is the material you will eventually be teaching its a surprisingly synergistic training method.

Some other random little things:
  • Um, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is tomorrow (OK technically Thursday, but you can catch it at midnight, so sort of tomorrow.) And I haven't done a thing about it. Yup, I'm offically one of those geeks. Its not that I'm disillusioned really; I will admit that my hopes are up. I just won't fit my life around Star Wars anymore. I mean I'll see it this weekend, obviously. But I'm not interested in a midnight screening, and I don't know if that makes me lame.

  • So Randy Milholland over at Something Positive has announced he's starting a spinoff comic. I kind of think its going to be about Anna, but I'm just guessing. I haven't kept up with his LJ community or forums or anything, so I could be way off base. I'm sort of excited by the prospect, although based on his experience with New Gold Dream who knows if there will be adequate follow-through.

  • And while I'm on the subject of webcomic news... what the Hell, ClanBob? You tell me you're restarting Life of Riley, and then you dribble out like one comic a month. Don't get my hopes up just to piss on them, guys.

  • Finally, in happier news, White Wolf has finally admitted that they're hoping for an August 17th release for Mage: the Awakening. I'm so excited by this game's potential I can't even think straight. But I am equally prepared to go on running my beloved Mage: the Ascension if the folks over at White Wolf fuck it up. Which, let's face it, they might. There's not enough teaser material yet for me to make a real prediction on that. There's good indicators and bad indicators, so I'll just have to watch the website and bide my time for now.

You know I work there, right? I teach SAT and have for over a year, and I'm cross-training for LSAT.

Are you training for the SAT or what?

Best way to get "presenter" points: invest in markers beyond the four-color set and write out your boardwork beforehand on another sheet, not in your binder.

I knew you worked for a test prep company, I didn't realize it was Kaplan. I'm training for the SAT, yeah.

Boardwork is not my problem. Re-learning geometry, particularly as it applies to circles, is my problem.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was Session 3 of the vaunted KTDP (we love our acronyms at Kaplan; My favorite so far is RYSEM) which means that Monday is Session 4. So we're down to the serious stuff now.

Has your trainer been cutting people?

Indeterminate. There have been fewer people at each successive session, but my trainer has given the impression that he's as ignorant as the rest of us as to why that is.

Well, hey, at least you don't have to wait another 2 months for Star Wars to come out. I know someone somewhere accidentally will ruin it for me before I can see it here. Sigh.

Anyway, good luck with your Kaplan training. What kind of hours are they offering you?
