OK, so my recent post about why I don't tend to read fantasy has generated more comments than anything else in a while, so apparently some of my concerns about the state of the blog are being succesfully addressed. That makes me happy, and I'm going to try and Keep It (whatever exactly It is) Up.

Yesterday I was sort of idly pricing used copies of the Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox on Alibris.com, as I've returned that book to Dave A and would kind of like to own a copy for myself. My inclination is to buy hardcover, if I can get it, and apparently I can. But oh man, much as I may justify making ridiculous purchases for myself lately, I just can't see spending almost $200 on a book I've already read just because I want to own a copy for my library. At least not at this juncture. I suppose that'll have to go on the back burner for the time being.

And speaking of ridiculous purchases... the Prophet's Fall event is this weekend! That may seem like a total non sequitor to you, particularly given that I've volunteered to grunt for the staff and thus won't be paying the approximately $50 weekend event fee. However! 1. I'm buying some stuff for no other reason than because I'm going to this LARP (black clothes and combat boots, for example.) 2. I'm buying some stuff in an attempt to impress the staff with my marketable skills as a staff person (stage makeup and related supplies.) 3. I kinda sorta volunteered to help [livejournal.com profile] thablueguy round out his prop budget for the event, because September is a three paycheck month, so I can pretend to myself that I can afford it. All whinging about the expense (and it isn't really that great, in total) aside... I am, no fooling, totally psyched about this event.

So in addition to purchasing PF supplies and hanging around [livejournal.com profile] thablueguy's parents' garage (which he has converted into a temporary prop-and-costume studio, meaning its filled with all manner of nifty odds and ends) I also played some poker this weekend. [livejournal.com profile] sleetfall got together his largest game yet at his new palatial apartment, and although his roommate Phil rapidly went under the weather we still had so many players that folks felt compelled to split into two smaller games. I wasn't entirely happy with that decision, as I'm there more for the socializing than for the poker (at $5 buy-in, I'm just not terribly invested in the game.) But it worked out in the end; I got a chance to talk to most everyone, and played some good poker, too.

Sunday I was an absolute lump. I ate leftovers from my fridge, I hung around watching television, I enjoined my computer to entertain me and it complied. I randomly pulled up the first three episodes of HBO's new series Rome OnDemand and was pleasantly surprised by the results. They present a surprising degree of historical/literary accuracy, which appeals to the classical scholar in me. Plus there's a lot of gratuitous nudity and sex, and a fair bit of gratuitous violence, so that was also good.

That about brings us up to date. More to follow, but I don't want the entry to get too long and, oh yeah, I should probably do a little work.
