So I've had this problem ever since I got to Germany:

I hate beer.

It doesn't sound like such a big problem, but in Germany, it really really is. It's all people drink here. Particularly in the summer. There are these things here called Biergartens (yes, literally Beer Gardens) where people sit starting at about noon in the summer and going all night. You sit down, they bring you a beer. You finish that one, they bring you another. So on and so forth, all night long.

Telling people you don't want a beer in Germany is like telling them you're a vegetarian. Half the time they think you're joking.

I have instead cultivated a taste for Sangria, which works alright when we go to fake Mexican places. It's better than actually trying to keep up with Ali and Jan's ridiculous habit of drinking beer and doing tequila shots at the same time. Bleah... two horrible tastes, taste awful together.

There's this horrible beer called Kölsch (because it's made in Köln, which is what the Germans call Cologne) that everyone drinks around here. It's what's on tap. I saw the brewery when I went to Köln on Saturday with Melissa (who's friend, it turns out, is named Melanie. Knew it started with an M.)

My life is so ass-backwards here in some ways. I did't drink at all over the weekend, even tho' I drank every week night. Friday night I stumbled home drunk, and I haven't touched the stuff since. And now it's Monday afternoon and I find myself wondering if people are going out drinking tonight.

Anyway - apologies if this is scattered. I'll try and post more coherently another day.
