kein Alkohol ist auch keine Lösung!!!
Aug. 11th, 2003 02:20 pmTo my near total surprise, I now have a favorite German independent local pop-punk band. Namely SOS (Sound Ohne System) who I saw perform this past Saturday night at the Student Club here in Weimar. You can check the boys out at http://www.sound-ohne-system.de.vu . They played two long-ish sets, mostly original material interspersed with well-selected covers. I rocked out for a solid three hours and collapsed sweaty but happy into bed afterwards. Vicky (an English girl from the vicinity of Birmingham) apparently interviewed the band for the newspaper workshop and procured me a copy of their demo CD, which I just have to pick up from her at some point.
On Sunday I saw a screening of Bend It Like Beckham at the Student Center. For no intelligible reason the Germans insist on retitling the film Kick It Like Beckham, even when showing it in the original language. Sort of like their insistence on calling the movie 3 Engels für Charlie or Rebellion der Maschinen instead of the more literal Besteigung der Maschinen. Up until now I have simply been pleasantly tolerant of this odd tedency... then I found out that they call the most recent Studio Ghiblis film Chihiros Reise nach Zauberland. Now, admittedly, the original Japanese title contains a subtle play on words with the main character's name that the English title Spirited Away can't even hint at. But Chihiro's Trip to Magic-Land?????? C'mon, Germans. You can do better than that.
